The two stories in this dvd involve the verse: “Love your neighbor as yourself”. They are both entertaining and teach great values to kids. My 2 year old loves this video as well as The first Sing-along dvd. We have 2 others, but those are the favorites. As with all VeggieTales, some of the details are able to be understood by adults only-just because of personal experiences (like classical composers and such). To me, this makes it more fun to watch as I figure out how to help my child (as she grows) understand the nuances, as well. Highly recommend this to anyone wanting to teach the love your neighborlesson above to their kids.

I was really little when this show first started. And to be honest, I love this series alot more as a teenager than when I was younger. Yeah, weird, huh?

Anyways, to the review…

This episode is about loving your neighbor. It first starts out with a re-telling of the Good Samaritan story in a ryhmning fashion. Then you have Larry’s ’silly songs’ segment, this one is called “The Hairbrush Song”

Then you have the main feature, ‘The Gourds Must Be Crazy’

It’s a really good story about being a friend to those who are different because God made all of us special and different from each other.

The only disappointment I had is the DVD was too short!

It was rather enjoyable, but I wish I saw Junior on the USS Applepies alot longer than that. It would of been a pretty good space adventure. Junior is my favorite character out of all the vegetables ^_^

Still, I totally recommend this DVD! It’s a good story and a good lesson!

Why on Earth did they cancel this show? I compare this show to the likes of Lucy! It should have been shown on the mainstream TV channels. Funny, entertaining and a joy to watch. It will bring laughter into your home. There are not many shows that our entire family can sit down and enjoy together. The writers of this series are phenomenal!

All characters blend together to make this one of the best comedies in TV history! I’m so tired of reality shows that have consumed the airways. I fear shows like Reba will disappear into the sunset, and our society needs the laughter shows like this produce. I have season 1-5 and I cannot get enough of them.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Reba: Season 6! Click Here

However, the rush to get Season 5 out, you can tell FOX did a poor job in doing. The packaging was not as nice as Season 1-4. Not the caliber of quality they put into the first four Seasons. But SO very thankful they released it!

Thrilled that Scarlett Pomers character (Kyra) returned for Season 6.

I’m so sad that there will only be 13 more episodes released in Season 6, yet I will enjoy this show forever! I plan on doubling up my set to make sure I am never without this show.

Thank you Reba, and the entire cast, for the endless hours of laughter! We love you!

I was floored by how funny and charming this show is - a blend of “I love Lucy”, “Friends”, “The Cosby Show”, and maybe a touch of “Roseanne” thrown in.

All of the characters really work as sympathetic and interesting people, starting with Reba. She is just perfect as the strong, somewhat harried mom trying to navigate all the unconventional changes life has thrown at her and her family.

By season 6, Cheyenne and Van have matured into more responsible adults, but are still flaky and endearing enough to deliver many of the show’s laughs and satisfy fans who loved the innocent airheads of season 1.

The Brock and Barbara Jean story line was less satisfying to me — I wish they hadn’t experienced QUITE so much conflict in their marriage throughout so many seasons, but the implication by the end is that they will work it out and that they love each other, so that’s good.

Barbara Jean and Reba are always delightful together. And it is wonderful to have Kira back, as deadpan as ever, getting ready to go off into the world in her own way (despite Reba’s efforts to control her).

Reba is my favorite part of this sitcom, I must admit. She is pragmatic and funny and dispenses wisdom and sarcasm as needed. If you have put off watching this show because it stars “that country music singer”, I urge you to forget anything you’ve ever thought you knew about Reba McIntire and look at her work with fresh eyes.

She has excellent comedic timing and is so appealing in “Reba”, and really pulls the whole show together with her contagious energy and enthusiasm. I hope at some point we are able to see her again in another sitcom.

Regarding appropriateness for children, well, I do let my kids watch it and they adore it, but the show may not be appropriate for all families, due to the adult situations it contains. The show contains frank and sometimes irreverant references to sex, teen pregnancy, mistresses, infidelity, skipping school, etc… And there is mild swearing too. Nevertheless, I think the show really emphasizes the most important family values — loving and supporting each other, struggling to live with the consequences of your actions, and figuring out how to live a good, responsible life even when things don’t go exactly like you planned. And it does all this in a hilarious way.

I hope Season 6 includes some extras like the Season 1 DVDs did, perhaps some more commentary from the actors or some more outtakes. But regardless, A++++!

From distributor Harry H. Novak, purveyor of fine, wholesome sleaze from all across the globe, among other things, comes The Mad Butcher (1974), originally released as Lo Strangolatore di Vienna (1971). Directed by John Zurli aka Guido Zurli (Slave Girls of Sheba, Black Deep Throat), this Italian production features Victor Buono (What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte), probably known best as the portly, evil villain King Tut (”If the caped crumb is here, the cowled creep can’t be far behind.”), from the late 1960s Batman television series. Also appearing is cinematic muscleman Brad Harris (Goliath Against the Giants, The Fury of Hercules), Franca Polesello (Mole Men Vs. the Son of Hercules), and Karin Field (Night of the Vampires, The Devil’s Girls).

Buono plays Otto Lehman, a butcher by trade, who, up until recently, had been locked away in a Vienna mental institution for beating on an annoying customer with a few pounds of liver (it was either the nut farm or jail). I say `recently’ because Otto has been pronounced cured by his doctor (and he’s got the certificate to prove it), ready to be released back into society, into the arms of his incessantly nagging, overbearing wife Hanna (Polesello). Upon returning to his butcher shop, he finds things in a state of filthy disarray, as Hanna’s fat, hairy, incompetent, mole-like brother has been fumbling along in Otto’s absence. Otto quickly begins to set things in order, and we see he hasn’t lost his touch with the cleaver. Ah, nothing like seeing a true artesian practicing his craft. Otto refuses to move back to his home with his wife (I don’t blame him, as she’s a real piece of work), instead occupying the room above the shop, where the view ain’t so bad as his neighbor Berta (Field) can often be seen combing her hair all nekkid in front of her window…homina homina…things seem to be progressing, but Hanna is a persistent pain, one Otto finally disposes of in a fit of anger. Question now is what to do with the body? Well, as Otto would say, “Meat is meat”…yes, Otto turns her into sausages, and boy, do they sell! Meanwhile, Mike Lawrence (Harris), foreign correspondent, whose been itching for a story, begins to pitch woo to Berta. Some stuff happens, some more people end up in Otto’s sausage press, and the authorities begin to get suspicious, as does Hanna’s brother (boy, he’d make a whole shop full of sausages), about the increasing number of missing people. Mike believes Otto’s involved somehow, but due to lack of evidence, the police are stumped…and all the while the people of Vienna continue to comment on Otto’s delicious sausages. Eventually things come to a head as Otto’s passions for Berta get the best of him, and the police discover some unusual and telling clues in the oddest place…

Given the title of this feature I was expecting a whole lot of blood, but I was pleasantly surprised. There were a few murders by strangulation, but there was no actual butchery of any of the victims, as that aspect of the story was all implied. Some might be disheartened by this complete lack of gore, but I rather liked the tact the story took, focusing on the unexpected comedic nature of the characters, rather than wallowing around in blood and guts, which, quite honestly, I don’t dig on a lot, except for when the mood strikes me. There’s nothing wrong with a little slice and dice, a little hack and slash, a little gouging and disemboweling, but there’s plenty enough of that out there as is, so it was a nice change of pace to dabble in the psychological rather than the visceral. I think Buono did a wonderful job in one of his few leading roles, presenting a character somewhat charming on the surface, but one tinged with a touch of the madness on the inside, ultimately making the best of his situation. As far as the other performers, most did well enough, but Harris was awkward to say the least…when he wasn’t as stiff as a board, he was way over the top. He did make a likely hero, but also an annoying one given his constant interference and seeming `know-it-all’ attitude. Yeah, yeah, he was a reporter, and perhaps this is common to their ilk, but he seemed to spend more time wooing Berta and throwing accusations about than he did working his beat. I suppose it was a good thing, with regards to the story, he was as he was, given the incompetence of the authorities depicted within this film. But then I suppose I’m losing sight this is black comedy, and not a straight up horror film. There was some much appreciated nekidness, particularly on Ms. Field’s part…her facial features left a little to be desired (too eastern European for my tastes), but she had an awfully nice, all natural body. The story moves along fairly quickly, exhibiting no giant, gaping holes, but it did leave me wanting just a little, in terms of a proper disposition of the character Mrs. Kuntzmann (I think that was her name). This was the old, cranky, vile, hairy mole on her face crone Otto initially attacked (with probable cause after meeting her), which resulted in him being sent to the mental hospital in the first place. She makes a couple of appearances, verbally abusing Otto and throwing accusations about that he killed one of her precious cats (actually he did, but his intent didn’t seem that specific at the time). If anyone in this film deserved to be turned into mince pies, it was this hag, and it never happened…ah well…my favorite part of the film was near the end, as the police discover, in a manner of speaking, what Otto’s been using as source materials for his tasty sausages. As I said, the film does move along well, providing some actual tension here and there, culminating in better than expected fight scene between Mike and Otto, followed by a predictable, yet exquisitely appropriate, ending.

The picture quality, present in widescreen (1.85:1), on this Something Weird Video/Image Entertainment DVD, looks very sharp and clean, and the Dolby Digital audio is decent, but a little soft at times. As far as extras, there’s quite the cornucopia including a theatrical trailer for this film, along with ones for a slew of other Harry H. Novak films like Mother (1970), Axe (1977), The Beautiful, the Bloody, and the Bare (1964), Behind Locked Doors (1968), Caged Virgins (1971), The Child (1977), Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks (1974), and Rattlers (1976). Also included are a pair of short features, one titled Cannibal Island (9:49), featuring `authentic’ footage of cannibals dancing around and such, the second titled Cannibal Massage (20:05), which features a whole lot of the homoerotic. Finishing out the list of extras is a gallery of Harry H. Novak exploitation art, accompanied by Horrorama radio-spot rarities.

“I make the best sausage in Vienna” claims the mad butcher (a rotund fella by the name of Victor Bueno). And so he does. People from all over come to taste his famous delicacies. Seasoned with Human flesh. Aw hell, not only seasoned, it is human flesh! That is the premise for this one. Did I mention he’s an ex mental patient? And he has a thing for nubile young women? Ok. so this is not the most original of fare. Still, this film succeeds in making you smile at its cleverness. Of course, later when your eating that sausage for dinner, this story has a way of popping up in your mind. Its cheap, its corny and its got a dark irony that is hard to come by these days.In a belecose voice, the butcher says to one of his victims “you slut, how low and cheap you make yourself..this is not a whorehouse!”. Then he throws her in the meat grinder and serves her up to the public. Delicious!

This is a review of the quality of the Planet of the Apes [Blu-ray. The video looks good for a film as aged as this, but is not even close to stunning. The high def transfer in some cases actually serves to accentuate problems you might not have noticed otherwise. I saw more than a few soft scenes where they looked unfocused. Grain was never too obtrusive, but the colors were uneven through a good portion of the film. Some scenes were rich and vivid, and others washed out. My biggest problem is the sound. They present the sound here as a DTS 5.1 mix, and a mono mix. I chose DTS and was sorely dissapointed. My subwoofer never kicked on. That means that there was never an instance when there was a frequency lower than about 85hz. This made for a very shallow sounding mix. Adding to that, the surround speakers never seemed to register anything, and you’ve got what sounded to me like a mono mix anyway. All of the sound seemed to come from my center channel. To me, digitally remastering a film soundtrack at this level means accentuating the lower registries by adding lower frequencies, and placing atmospheric and musical elements in the surround channels. If you don’t plan on doing that, what’s the use of calling it a DTS 5.1 mix? Anyway, this is by far the best transfer I’ve ever seen of the film, but don’t be looking for anything more than a slightly better than average transfer, and a glorified mono track.

I recently watched this original version of “The Planet of the Apes” for the first time since seeing it at a drive-in theater back in 1968. First I was amazed at how much of the film I had forgotten. Actually, most of what I remembered was the (then) shocking ending. What I was impressed with this time around was what an intelligent and well-scripted film this was (and still is). Like any good science fiction, this film provides an interesting commentary on the human condition. One the one hand you have the Minister of Science and Defender of the Faith debunking and destroying an archeological dig, because it is contrary to the faith of the Apes, but on the other hand in his reading from the sacred scrolls you hear the accurate description of the destructive (dare I say “sinful?”) nature of humans. I’ve been pondering this segment of the film quite a bit over the past few days. Like others, I think Charlton Heston is in fine form here. It’s easy to picture him as president of the National Rifle Association after seeing this film. I still prefer Heston in “Ben Hur” and “the Ten Commandments,” but that probably reflects my personal interest in the stories that are told there. As one Academy Award film-maker recently said upon receiving his lifetime achievement Oscar (I think it was Norman Jewison), “Find a story that needs to be told and tell it.” This version of “The Planet of the Apes” certainly tells a good story, and tells it well.

Director Murray Lerner and his film crew were hired by the Isle of Wight Festival promoters to make a movie of the events and music that took place from August 26-31st 1970. Due to financial problems and lack of interest from the film distributors, the film footage sat unreleased for twenty-five years (although bits of Hendrix, The Who & Free’s performances surfaced in other presentations). Before the 1995 movie was released I absolutely hungered to see anything of this footage. Admittedly, my anticipation for the film was incredible. Eventually I got my wish. Fortunately, I was generally satisfied with MESSAGE TO LOVE, although I did have reservations. First the good: I was able to see The Doors, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Free, Taste, etc. in their prime. These are classic performances, mostly well played. The scene of Kris Kristofferson getting booed off stage haunted me for weeks; I felt sorry for the guy. Too bad they didn’t show his come-back performance a few days later, where he was better received.

The dissapointments: I want more footage. A lot of the music performances are extremely edited-down. Donovan is only seen for like three seconds. John Sebastian’s show stopping performance is poorly edited too as they come in for the ending of his song. Performances from Tony Joe White, Melanie, Cactus, Procol Harum weren’t even included in favor of “Machine Gun” (Hendrix) “All Right Now” (Free) “Young Man Blues” (The Who) …redundant footage, because they were all available in other presentations.

Lastly, the film is generally downbeat, focusing in on the problems that plagued the festival. Actually, the violence and unpleasentness is overplayed. This was actually a good festival, with good bands and a lot of positive aspects. Too bad Lerner couldn’t focus more on this. Nevertheless, it’s still a fine film and I hope to see more footage released to the public.

Most of the performances are good, although a little too brief (and some songs are probably edited), which is why I had to dock this review one star. This is more of a documentary of the event than anything else. You’ll see the promoters and the crowd get almost as much time on the camera as the performers. The Isle of Wight wasn’t exactly Britain’s answer to Woodstock (Altamont ended the Woodstock spirit and this is Hippydom’s last true hurrah), but still a great festival.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Message to Love - The Isle of Wight Festival! Click Here

This has poignant moments, like Jimi Hendrix’ final performance featuring “Message to Love,” “Machine Gun” and “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return),” one of the Doors’ final performances (Jim Morrison looks sad and out of it) featuring “When the Music’s Over” and “The End” and Joni Mitchell bursting out in tears after one rambunctious hippie interrupts her set while playing “Woodstock” (he’s lucky he didn’t try interrupting the Who’s set!). She carries on singing “Big Yellow Taxi.” After instances like Altamont, the promoters add security like a metal fence dividing the young teens and adults (some English, some American) who’ve paid admission and those who haven’t and police dogs. So, naturally, there’s plenty of arguments between the promoters and the music fans. Due to the war between them, Kris Kristoferson is unduly booed onstage. Folks are too busy trying to get in to listen to the original “Me and Bobbie McGee.” Joan Baez, after her performance of “Let It Be” is interviewed. She’s honest and says “This is my job, so naturally, I expect to be paid.” A humorous moment is Tiny Tim singing via megaphone “There’ll Always Be An England.” A sad moment is when one hippie says he’s given his young son LSD (nowadays, a social worker would probably take the son away from him). It’s amusing to see a young thin Ian Anderson perform with Jethro Tull (”Whoever said we wouldn’t perform tonight is full of…”) on “My Sunday Feeeling” and a young thin Paul Rogers perform “All Right Now” with Free. This is also Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s debut performance (each of them celebrates in full flamboyance by Emerson nearly destroying his organ, Lake setting off a cannon and Palmer removing his shirt while performing “Pictures at an Exhibition/Blue Rondo a la Turk”). It’s also one of the Moody Blues’ 1st performances live. Fortunately for the freeloaders (nowadays one would find it extraordinary that they would spend a lot of money on crossing the boat to the Isle and not schill out 3 English pounds), the fence is taken down and all hold hands in peace, while a guitar plays “Amazing Grace.” You really sympathize with Rikki (one of the emcees), as he bears his heart with the audience that he and the other promoters will have lots of fees to pay for this decision. As the festival comes to end, Rikki later sums it all up when he says “This is the last great event.” One of the carpenters looks a little like Jerry Garcia!

An edition with more complete performances would be great in the future. In the meantime, this will have to do. By the way, this is a 2 sided disk (at least my copy is) and if it ends with Joni Mitchell singing “Big Yellow Taxi,” turn the disk over and you’ll get Miles Davis and the rest of the program.

Whether it be Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do or Jiu-Jitsu; ALL forms of Martial Arts is a way of Self Expression. The fantastic Japanese Martial Arts melodrama, “BLACK BELT” (aka. Kuro Obi, 2007) explores the character of Karate itself and is loosely based on a true story. The film effectively balances the YIN and the YANG using the tumultuous military period in a 1930s Japan as its backdrop. It delves into the face of violent confrontation and the reflection on moral responsibility.

At an isolated dojo headed by Sensei Eiken Shibahara (Shinya Ohwada), three students: Giryu (Akihito Yagi), Taikan (Tatsuya Naka) and Choie (Yuji Suzuki) train relentlessly under their master’s instructions. One day, when the Kenpeitai (Japanese military) threaten to ousts them from their own school, the encounter leaves Choie badly wounded with Taikan and Giryu taking up the challenge. Giryu defeats the commanding officer without throwing a single punch that led the officer to commit Seppuku.

After their master’s death, the trio was hired to train military soldiers since the two both displayed impressive prowess. But fate interferes when Giryu becomes wounded by the officer’s vengeful children and he becomes separated from the group. Taikan becomes influenced by the ways of the world while Giryu befriends a kindly family. Fate has played them in opposing hands and an inevitable showdown is poised to bring the traditional Giryu against the corrupted Taikan–just who is truly deserving of the KURO OBI?

“Black Belt” is a thinking man’s martial arts film. The screenplay by George Ilda is a lush impressive breeding ground for melodrama and with Shinichi Nagasaki’s (A Tender Place) direction taking a more somber, novelistic approach to its story; the film explores the tensions of Karate. The film is an expression of the spirit of Karate, and Director Nagasaki has opted for a more character-driven approach in place of dazzling and unrealistic martial arts displays, for which he is to be commended. I am in total awe when a director instead goes for the spirit of a concept rather than just show how cool fight sequences can look.

The cast, Tatsuya Naka and Akihito Yagi are Black Belt holders themselves and they look very natural. Now, don’t mistake my earlier comment that the film is lacking in the number of fight sequences; there are quite a great number of fight scenes that display the beauty of Karate. Although the film focuses more on its characters and while the film’s plot is a bit simple, the action and fights are nicely placed to keep us entertained. The fight sequences themselves are a form of character development. As I’ve said, martial arts is a form of self-expression and so the film capitalizes on this idea. The action is there to build the characters` credibility, and it feels necessary to get to the film’s resolution. Unlike most martial arts films that have the story revolving on the action scenes, in this film, the action revolves in its plot.

The fight sequences by Fuyuhiko Nishi are smooth and VERY realistic. Most martial arts fans always see the choreography of the fights as a film’s major selling point, and this film delivers; the fights are AWESOME to see and more impressive as it avoided the use of wires and extravagant stunt work. I have never witnessed such well-choreographed fights since I saw real live competition. The camera work stays at a distance so you can see the movement between the fighters. The fights are hard-hitting and looks quite real, they aren`t overly long and excellently paced. These characters are supposed to be lethal weapons but no one said they were emotionless. The fighters in this film feel very human, you see their concentration in their eyes and they can feel pain. The magic is that they manage to overcome the pain.

From the film’s opening act, you see the depths of Giryu, Taikan and Choei’s soul. Taikan is a young man who revels in competition and violent encounter to find the art’s meaning. Choei is the weakest student, but he is level-headed and truthful to himself which is why he was chosen to pick their master’s successor after his death. Giryu is very traditional, Shibahara’s teachings are similar to a religion to him and he would rather die than to stray from his teachings. “Karate is not to throw a punch or a kick, never attack, instead defend against an opponent’s attack–parry and stave off the opponent. This way you can reach perfection” as quoted by Sensei Shibahara.

While the film is quite predictable, the direction is very solid and the script is sharp. I called this film a Martial Arts melodrama because it focuses on its characters but let me once again make it clear that action fans won’t be disappointed. The absence of CGI and wirework in its fights are the film’s biggest strength and simplicity is its expression. The final encounter is shot in black and white perhaps to emphasize the clash between the Yin and the Yang, or to remind us that Karate is an ancient art that existed for hundreds of years.

“KURO OBI” is a beautiful film, it is definitely a thinking man’s film. The film set out to express the soul of Karate and director Nagasaki has achieved what he wanted to do by carefully measuring his approach. The film’s simple plot may be its Achilles’ heel but as with Karate, simplicity is often the most effective approach. After all, throwing too many punches can hurt a fighter himself, as can pitching too many ideas can hurt a film. “Black Belt” is solid, and nicely executed.

What is really worth fighting for? The goal is not for competition but the battle for enlightenment. Black can never look dirty, and a fighter must be pure. The Belt represents willpower.

“From Strength will come compassion, from compassion, strength will emerge”

Highly Recommended!! [4 ½ Stars]

As a student of traditional JKA Shotokan karate for many years and an avid martial arts movie fan I have to say that I was stunned by this movie - in all my years this is the first time that I have seen a movie about traditional karate. I was overwhelmed by the characters depiction of traditional karate and when I did my research on the two principle characters and found out that they are 6th degree (JKA) and 5th degree (Goju) karate masters I was VERY impressed.

I will not try and give a review of the film (that has already been done) - I will just say if you are a traditional karate student - see this movie - if not see it anyway.

Note: When Sensei Naka performs the kata’s Nijushiho and Meikyo I felt a sense of pride in knowing that the general public was finally getting a chance to see actual traditional style karate (no offense to the Goju kata (smile)).

Purchase this movie - maybe more will be made.

The first episode of The Inspector debuted in theaters alongside the James Bond adventure Thunderball in 1965, and fits perfectly with the whole secret agent craze of the 60s. And though each episode was originally released in theaters, the Inspector cartoons also appeared alongside the Pink Panther on Saturday Morning programming for several years.

The character of The Inspector - clearly based on Inspector Clouseau from the Pink Panther films though his name is never given - bumbles his way through case after case with the aid of his trusty sidekick Deux Deux (pronounced Dudu). Deux Duex is Spanish, but somehow has found his way to the French Surete, and a running gag has The Inspector instructing him that he should say “Oui” instead of “Si” all the time.

The Inspector originally faced off against a host of unique villains, including The Blotch, The Mad Bomber, Captain Clamity, and Two-Faced Harry in a grand total of 34 kid-friendly cartoon shorts. Unfortunately, this DVD will only include half of the series (the other half probably being released seperately in a few months’ time).

The slapstick shorts in this series represent to me some of the very best to come from the DePatie-Freleng studio (along with The Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection).

Very highly recommended!

Just to clear up the misleading title of this set, the Pink Panther does not appear in these cartoons. It seems that MGM home video felt that nobody would know who The Inspector was, so they had to tag him as one of the Pink Panther’s friends.

This cartoon series is historically important, produced in the late 1960’s after all but two of the major studios gave up producing new cartoons for the theaters. Friz Freleng (formerly directing for Warner Brothers’ Looney Tunes & Merry Melodies) teamed with David DePatie to form a new Animation studio, Depatie-Freleng, after Warner shut its doors. In an ironic twist Warner then contracted with them to continue producing Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies for theaters!

But around that same time Depatie-Freleng produced an animated title sequence for the first Pink Panther movie. It was so popular that United Artists contracted with them to produce a series of Pink Panther Cartoons. Unlike the title sequence, the Pink Panther was no longer persued by The Inspector.

However, later that year The Inspector got his own theatrical cartoon series, based not on Peter Sellers but on the short, big-nosed character in the title sequences. He was now teamed up with a spanish assistant who joined him in persuing some stylistic villians like a mad bomber who looked like a hairy ink spot, or a three headed black shadow that can take on many forms to conceal itself.

Pat Harrington (who later went on to be the handyman Schneider in ONE DAY AT A TIME) voiced The Inspector, giving a slight impression of Peter Sellers. He was joined by veteran voice actors such as Paul Frees & Larry Storch (Agarn in F TROOP). Animation directors for the old Warner Brothers studio also joined the Depatie-Freleng studios to produce these classic 1960’s cartoons. And the quality of their work shows when comparing these to other cartoons produced at the same time from studios such as Walter Lantz.

The Inspector series was retired in 1969 and sold to NBC television as a part of the Pink Panther show. Laugh tracks were added to these theatrical cartoons which gave them a television feel, in general theatrical cartoons ran on TV without the laugh tracks. The title sections were shortened & given a new music track for the TV show.

This collection gathers the first 17 cartoons of the 34 cartoon series with their original theatrical titles & music intact.

Thanks to the power of the internet, it’s rare that an anime title (in this case an OVA full-length feature film) should manage to take me by surprise. And yet when Funimation’s reissue of ADV Film’s Blade of the Phantom Master showed up unannounced; that’s exactly what happened. Based on a popular Korean manga, the anime incarnation has been around for several years now but hadn’t made my short list of must-have properties… until now.

Coming in at a total runtime of 90 minutes, Blade of the Phantom Master occupies a single disc packaged in a standard-sized DVD case. The show wears an appropriate, if not slightly conservative TV MA (17+) rating due to some fairly graphic violent sequences (no nudity, sex, or particularly rough language however).

Language options are typical sub and dub meaning English and Japanese dialog tracks (presented in Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound) and English subtitles beneath either if desired.

Extras are quite robust and include a making of the video segment, storyboards, production sketches, interviews with the Japanese cast, original Japanese trailers and TV spots, clean opening and closing themes, and Funimation trailers.

The story begins in the scorching desert where lead character Munsu, an agent once obliged to a now-fallen kingdom (Jushin), meets up with a fellow traveler who actually ends up saving his life. It turns out Munsu has actually crossed paths with a young man on a camel who happens to be traveling to his homeland after having failed to acquire the skills necessary to save his girl from the clutches of a detested dictator.

Reluctant to get involved, Munsu is surprised to discover that the young man had put all of his faith in becoming the type of mystic warrior (an Amen Osa) that Munsu himself just so happens to be.

The ensuing story takes several twists and turns, many of which come on quickly and leave little time for viewer remorse. Within no time, Munsu finds himself on a wild escapade with a beautiful (and nearly perpetually-half-naked) bodyguard (or Sando in this mythos) named Chun Hyang.

The show can best be described as an action-piece with some truly awesome battle scenes that combine CGI techniques with cell animation nearly flawlessly. Beneath the beautiful visuals and quick-paced action lies a more tragic tale that works on so many subtle levels. Especially effective is the antihero tones associated with the lead character. While fighting for justice, he is commonly forced to resort to violence, manipulation, deceit, and trickery, yet in the end his undeniable sense of righteousness (and confidence) that prevails.

The title of this OVA hints toward Munsu’s true ability, which is to summon a phantom army that fight at his beckoning call (which in this case involves the revealing of his three-horsed medallion). The undead warriors are chillingly fantastic in appearance and animation- Think mustached masks straight out of V for Vendetta, with long-drooping jester hats, and statures of some 10-foot in height. When these guys appear, it’s on!

This coupled to Munsu’s penchant for blasting baddies with his firearms (pistols, rifles), and exploding long strings of dynamite, the formula for cool visuals is complete and the sound score backs up the eye-candy perfectly. Musical numbers are sweeping and dramatic but fall away to subtle tension with uncanny seamlessness.

Voice work is fairly spectacular in both the original Japanese dialog and the English dub. As most true anime fans will attest, the English dub usually falls short of the emotional range captured by the Japanese actor counterparts, but that’s simply not the case here. The emotion, conviction, and sound mix in the English revision are every bit as moving as the original, giving fans a true choice when they sit down to view the show.

My only complaint (and the only factor keeping this film from earning a perfect 5-star score) is the fact that the movie assumes that the viewer is up to speed on the mythos of the show (presumably through the ongoing manga) before even starting out. I don’t mean to suggest that the movie won’t make sense to said individuals (since I was one myself going in) but little things like the breathing condition that affects Munsu (like asthma) and requires a sort-of inhaler was the result of a spell placed upon him. Or that he is seeking vengeance on the man who killed his best friend (the king of Jushin); an act that ultimately led to the fall of the land, is mentioned but never fully explained either. These elements are not only incredibly interesting; they could have really shed some light on the characters’ motivations throughout.

I was forced to dig up these facts through online research after the film concluded since I was left wanting to know more about this spectacularly assembled story.

As it stands, this is pretty close to animated perfection and while it doesn’t seem likely that any more anime episodes of this tale will be made in the future, I can attest with confidence that after absorbing this film, you’ll wish they would reconsider!

My three year old loves this DVD! He asks to see it at least once a day. My husband and I like the fact that Baby Bear experiences both the positive and negative aspects of becoming a big brother. One of the clips of “real” people depicts a family having a third child, and one of the older siblings has Down’s. I love that Sesame Street doesn’t shy away from using kids with special needs and shows that they are just regular people like the rest of us. Also, scenes in the hospital show that it is not a scary place to be.

Our 2 1/2-year old boy loves this video. He showed little interest in it before his little sister was born but really enjoys watching it since she has joined our family because he can relate to little bear’s experiences. It has helped him understand both the positive and negative emotions he was feeling about being a big brother, and has helped him understand why his baby sister cries and doesn’t play with him yet. It is a great gift for any family expecting a new baby.
